Designer: Michael Gills
Publisher: Letraset
Modern in style but with an unmistakable touch of the traditional, that is
Spidercave.
Perhaps not so surprising when you learn that this new series has been created by Michael Gills, a designer who always seems to achieve a subtle balance between a contemporary appearance whilst incorporating the provenance of traditional latin letterforms. The highly successful Letraset Charlotte and Letraset Charlotte Sans series bear testimony to this.
Spidercave is categorised as a semi-sans, its ‘top left, bottom right’ serif structure a tried and tested feature that ensures versatility. It blends easily within the overall design, permitting tight, natural looking letterspacing to provide additional impact at display sizes whilst aiding legibility in the smaller text sizes.
The simplicity of line and angular serifs of
Spidercave will, no doubt, attract the attention of those graphic designers and typographers who have need of something that fulfils a thoroughly modern, 21st century appearance. The current fashion for simple, clean lines within a contemporary ‘lifestyle’ environment understandably attracts widespread media advertising. New magazines which address this trend seem to appear almost daily and a typeface such as
Spidercave, with its variety of weights and derivatives, will undoubtedly provide an appropriate choice.
Spidercave get its name from a close friend who introduced Gills to classical books, and comprises a Roman, Italic, Bold and Ornamented style within its portfolio.
